A Brief Rundown on How Wooden Clogs are Manufactured

Clogs today come in many varieties such as wooden clog sandals, clog boots and clog heels. But not many know about their background. Where did clogs come from? How are they made?
Clogs that we know today are descendants of wooden clogs that were used by the French, Swedish and the Dutch at the beginning of the twentieth century. Initially used by agricultural workers to protect their feet from mud and injuries, they slowly evolved into style icons that are widely popular today.

The process of making clogs is mostly a standard one. Earlier made entirely by hand, clogs today are made using a mixture of hand and machine manufacturing processes. A short summary of the process is as follows:
  • Wood from willow or poplar trees is trimmed into logs which are then fed into a saw to cut them into rectangular blocks. These blocks are then roughly cut into sizes of wooden clog sandals into which they will be made. The size changes depending on the type and size of the clog to be made.
  • A machine called as shaper is used to further trim the outer side of the blocks into shoes. A vinyl shoe is used as the model shoe to shape the wood block into the desired shape. Electrical cutting tools cut the blocks into perfectly shaped shoes. They carve in opposite directions, resulting in both the right shoe and left shoe being carved simultaneously.
  • A boring machine is then used to carve the interior. The machine carves from outside to inside, leaving a quarter inch of material for manual shaping.
  • The next step includes fine-tuning the interior of the shoes, either manually or automatically using a precise cutting machine. Extra wood and sharp points are smoothened out to leave the interior extremely smooth.
  •  Next step involves drying and curing of the shoes. Placing them out in the open or near a hot air furnace allows moisture in the wood to disappear, hardening the shoes.
  • The final step is finishing of the shoes. Dried shoes are smoothened with sandpaper to make them ready to be worn. They can be then decorated and varnished if necessary.

Criteria For Purchasing Custom Made Clogs

I am an ardent fan of custom-made clogs. This footwear does not figure in the list of the most stylish options but will qualify for those who prioritize comfort over style. They can easily be paired up with every outfit that you can imagine. Once you have convinced yourself for investing in this footwear choice, you might want to make the hard decision of going for custom clogs or pick up the ones from the store. Here is a list of reasons that will help you decide for the custom-made heeled clogs right away.

Made to measure: when you order custom-made heeled clogs, you must make sure that you have the exact size in mind. If you are unsure about the size of your foot, it is best to walk into the store and discuss the measuring options with the clog master. Since the material used in making the heeled clogs is different from the normal one, you might want to go for a size bigger to be comfortable in the shoes.

Choosing the material: One of the best things about buying the custom fit of heeled clogs is the fact that you can select the material of wood and leather as per your budget. The style of the clogs will be of your choice, and you can also decide on the height on the heels as per your requirement. For those who suffer from issues of flat foot and other foot related problems, you can even customize the heels to suit your foot completely.

Taking care of the shoes: While other shoes do not have any after sale services, your clog maker will help you learn the best ways to keep your clogs looking new. If you trip and chip off the wood from the sole of the shoes, you can always make amends with the clog maker. They may also help you get the perfect shape of the shoe that will be comfortable around the edges and will not end up in a shoe bite.

Even though you might have to shell out more money in purchasing the custom heeled clogs, they are worth the time and effort that you will put in getting this footwear to be a staple in your wardrobe.

Ladies!! Get Ready To Drool Over Vintage Clogs.

“What goes around comes around”-they said. Well, the clichéd expression chimes well with clogs.  Wooden clog sandals have come a long way from their Dutch origins. Back then, clogs were hand-crafted and made completely of wood since they last longer, do not hold moisture and insulate the feet from the ground.

Of late, the clunky wooden shoes have been re-imagined into a stylish fashion accessory that is a common sight on fashion ramps. Clog sandals worn today are not entirely made of wood. The upper portion covering the top and the sides of the clog is made of leather or rubber while the heel is left exposed.

The rubber type of clog sandal usually comes in a single color and has a strap that goes around the heel and is generally worn as a summer sandal. Clog sandals have evolved as a fashion accessory since they offer superior stability and leg comfort. They are easy to wear and easy to keep on the feet. Wooden clog sandals come in three different soles- classic, high and wedge.

Because of the ease, versatility, and protection it offers, wooden clog sandals have emerged as a staple footwear of many industry verticals. Professional clogs have to be extremely comfortable and durable since in many professions, wearers have to stand for long durations and it’s the feet that suffer the most in the process.

Nurses prefer clog sandals because they provide better lower back support and protect the feet from potential injuries like falling objects and exposure to harmful chemicals.

In recent times, clogs are being manufactured in such a way that they suit a host of occasions. There are dressy clogs, casual clogs, professional clogs, and wooden clogs. Dressy clogs fall between professional and casual clogs. They are clunky and have high heels and are adorned with ornate designs and embellishments.

Casual clogs are those which you can wear both indoors and outdoors. They have short heels which are made of wood. The upper part is made of inexpensive material like nylon or cotton.

Professional clogs are one of the most expensive clogs and come in leather or synthetic upper options. They are mostly worn by chefs and nurses and employ low heels and are comfortable too. Wooden clogs now are machine-made and come in flat or high heels. They can be worn with a casual attire or a formal one.

Clog Boots Bring The Pizzazz Women Crave In Their Outfits

“I always love to dress up, but I usually end up in a leather jacket and boots,” quipped Bella Hadid once. Boots have been a woman’s weakness from time immemorial. The cadence of the heels clacking on a solid surface makes a woman feel like an adult force of nature. She feels secure and walks with an air of authority.

In a world dominated by chauvinistic males, the ‘click clack’ sound of heels advertises a woman’s unassuming presence. It makes her feel like a tough powerhouse, not to be bogged down by the omnipresent male domain.

Women simply love the look of boots. They feel a lot more feminine in high boots. Studies show that men find women in heels to be sexually attractive. And women know that. Walking in boots with a stomp make women proud and confident.

Amongst a crowd of bumbling men and unwelcome male advances, walking with a certain degree of bad-assery and command can exude a dominant appeal. Clog boots carry the same trait of oomph n pizzazz and women are going gaga over it.

Clogs underwent a massive reformation in terms of looks, comfort, texture and design, but one constituent remained the same-the wooden heel. People may call wooden shoes as ugly or out of place, but clogs have survived the ridicule and taunts and have still made their presence felt in the 21st century. One of the most talked about aspects about clogs is the wooden heel. Clogs with their wooden heel provide excellent ankle and lumbar support which helps the wearer to walk around for longer periods of time without feeling any discomfort.

Clogs come in a variety of designs. Among them, heel clogs, clog boots and clog sandals have risen in popularity among women. Clog boots are one of the varieties of shoes a women should have in her shoe collection. These shoes are ideal for wearing in the chilly winters. The most popular varieties of clog boots are high boots and ankle boots. Leather and suede are the two materials used to manufacture these boots.

With Christmas around the corner and the chill gradually setting in, clog boots can be the most comfortable option to go for while stepping out of your home. You can easily team those elegant boots with skinny jeans and a baggy sweater. Short dresses will also be a good option to wear with high boots. Just don’t forget to wear a pair of stockings to complete the look.

Swedish Clogs Journey From Rags To Riches

Swedish clogs which were popular in the 1900’s as a practical footwear, have now reincarnated themselves into a fashionable footwear and captured the attention of fashionistas and even celebrities. This simple footwear which was used by fishermen and laborers of yore as a protective covering for the foot have now evolved into a fashion staple, seen mostly on fashion parades of renowned brands.

Clogs from Sweden were made partly or completely out of wood in the past. They were crafted by hand by dexterous clog makers. Wood became the primary choice for manufacture of clogs since it is durable, doesn't hold moisture and insulates the feet from the ground.

Nowadays, Swedish wooden clogs are made by machines, but there are some places in the Netherlands and the EU where these clogs are still made by hand. The mechanized process of making clogs has erased the personality and distinct features that are imbued in the handcrafted clogs.

Swedish wooden clogs receive a sort of traditional opulence when they are forged by hand. A clog maker adds his own set of designs and embellishments when he crafts a clog by hand to bring individuality and uniqueness to the shoe. The handcrafted Swedish wooden clogs have a distinct texture and eye-catching color and are valued more since they are an expression of the person who made it. A handcrafted clog cannot be duplicated as the maker adds his own creativity and variety in each pair which makes it one-of-a-kind.

Clogs from Sweden have become a personal favorite among women. These shoes have become an indispensable part of a women’s shoe rack and are used by everyone, ranging from business magnets to housewives. Career-driven and ambitious women of today want a footwear that accentuates their sense of style without going over-the-top and clogs perfectly fit the bill.

Clogs come with chunky heels and metal stud detailing over the edges and modern women don’t feel shy to flaunt those. The 21st century women is well-informed about the ill-effects of standing for long hours wearing the wrong footwear. So she prefers clogs since those shoes have orthopedic values and take care of the feet, besides providing comfort throughout the day.

An In-Depth Look At The History Of Clogs

Clogs were a staple footwear for peasants and mine workers in the 70s and were worn to provide protection and comfort to the feet. Though considered a footwear for the labor class, wooden clog sandals came of age and became a fashion accessory towards the end of the 20th century.

These wooden clog sandals had their roots in Holland and eventually spread into France, England and Scandinavia. During the time of Industrial revolution, clogs became the most preferred shoe for workers. The all-wooden shoe was manufactured from a single block of wood and were called by different names in different countries. In Netherlands, they were called Klomp, in Germany, Klompen and in France, Sabots. The Dutch clogs were made entirely of wood whereas the French clogs were made of wood and leather.

Wooden clog sandals were popular since they provided warmth and protection. Wooden clogs kept the feet in good stead and so were worn by miners, agricultural workers and construction workers. The clogs protected the feet of agricultural workers from mud and from injury caused by sharp tools used in the field. Farmers used to wear specially decorated clogs to attend church on Sundays and also on holidays.

The working clogs were just simple ones and devoid of decoration. However, clogs which were worn to church or to weddings were painted and carried embellishments on them. Red, black and yellow were the only colors used on the clogs. The wooden clogs also didn’t carry any decoration but to make them look a bit fancy and give a leathery feel, the upper portion featured laces and lace holes.

Wooden clog sandals are made from three types of wood- European willow, yellow poplar and tulip poplar. These woods are hard and resistant to water. After the tree is felled, the wood is cut and made into clogs. No other material is used to manufacture these shoes. Wooden clogs were traditionally made entirely out of hand by specialized artisans though nowadays the shoes are carved by machine.

The wooden clogs have staged a graceful comeback after their downfall in the 70s, thanks to their sudden appearance on fashion parades of elite brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton. The clogs have since become a fashion accessory and are a rage today among fashionable women. These wooden clogs for women look extremely appealing with every type of dress and have become a firm favorite of fashionista women.

A Brief History Of Wooden Clog Boots

Wooden clog boots are a typical Dutch heritage. Through the ages, wooden shoes were found all over the European mainland from the Scandinavian countries up north to the Mediterranean south. There were even claims that it was the French who invented clog shoes. But nowadays, wooden clog boots are a true symbol for Holland.

In the Netherlands, the oldest wooden shoe ever found were from 1230 AD. This shoe was found in Nieuwendijk in 1979. Another antique wooden clog shoe was found in 1990 in a dam near Rotterdam’s rotte river. This wooden clog boot dated 1280 is made from alder. Thus, we can conclude with certainty that wooden clog boots have been worn for over 800 years or more.

Trippen were wooden shoes having two bulges at the bottom and two triangles shaped pieces of leather on top for attachment, which is showing resemblance with sandals. However, wooden clog boots gained in popularity since the beginning of the 16th century. The main reason behind this is the shoes are made out of one piece which proved to be firm and practical with a relatively cheap alternative.

They protect the feet from dirt and formed a useful additive in the moistures climate.
Nowadays, wooden clog boots are made little different from their ancestors 800 years ago. After the 1890 flourish of industries, shoe manufacturers incited a negative trend in demand for wooden shoes. But then after World War II, almost every village bore its own wooden clog shoemaker, resulting in a variety of styles, colors, carvings, and decorations.

Men’s clog boots were black or yellow usually where women were lacquered black or had elaborated decoration motifs.

Alder is said to be very good at absorbing moisture and keeping the feet dry. It’s light and can be worked into shape easily, so it’s good in industries. Most wooden clog shoes made of alder wood gives it more survivability.

Unfortunately, the wearer of wooden shoes is becoming rarer day by day. Wooden clog boots are merely seen in the countryside used by farmers, gardeners, fishermen and road workers. Luckily, wooden clog boot manufacturers are still active at present, adopting developed techniques.
